Fake marriages taking place in Nigeria, says Immigration Boss
Fake marriages taking place in Nigeria, says Immigration boss
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has said that a lot of “fake marriages’’ are taking place between Nigerians and foreigners in the country.
Mr Muhammad Babandede, Comptroller General of the agency stated this on Wednesday in Abuja, saying that male foreigners were mostly involved in the act.
He spoke at an operational review meeting with Zonal Coordinators and State Comptrollers of the agency at its national headquarters.

Babandede said their aim was to cheat the conditions for the issuance of residence and work permits to foreigners by the agency.
“We have observed that foreigners, especially men, are trying to beat the system of issuance of residence permits.
“A lot of fake or `arrangee’ marriages are going on, and that would give them permission to stay in this country without much liabilities.
“The advantage is that when you are the spouse of a Nigerian, you have no limitation on the job you will do; you don’t have to pay residence permit fees; it is easier for you to stay.
“So, we are beginning to face difficulties because many people are becoming married on temporary ground,’’ Babandede said.
The NIS boss said the agency had arrested some culprits, and would tighten the conditions for the issuance of permits to check the abuse.
He said that as part of the measures to check the abuse, the agency would henceforth monitor marriages between Nigerians and foreigners in the country.
“We will not allow any person to come for holiday marriage, because we have also observed that people just come on holidays, arrange marriages in Nigeria and go back.
“We will not allow that anymore; you have to stay for a period of six months after marriage before you get our residence permit.
“You have to also enter with permission to stay in Nigeria, so you must come with the residency visa; you can’t come as a tourist and get married,’’ he said.
Babandede further said that the agency was also planning to restrict foreign spouses to jobs for which Nigerians lacked the requisite skills and qualifications.
He stated that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior and the NIS, was looking into the issue, which he described as a national security threat.

Majid Michel: Late Ebony Reigns Never Acted Like a Christian -
Mar 5, 2018 10:46 PM

Ghanaian-Lebanese actor Majid Michel remembers the late Ghanaian singer ebony reigns but questioned her earthly living.
The singer who lost her life in an auto crash last week was very reckless in her short stay on according to Michel.
Ebony reigns was a drug addict which made her do some stuffs that a Christian would consider is out of the Christendom which has given room for the actor to query her Christian life.
“People: but she doesn’t act like a Christian. God: Am not looking for actors. Rest in peace, only Jesus knew your heart.” He wrote
Majid Michel received nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2017. He eventually won the award in 2012 after three previous consecutive nomination.

60 Year-Old Nigerian Man Weds A 15 Year-Old Indian Girl (Photos)
Mar 2, 2018 8:45 AM

Since the Photos from wedding of an underage Indian girl to the Nigerian old man hit the internet many social media users have been reacting to it.
According to sources, the wedding ceremony of the underage Indian girl, took place in a Karnataka coastal family.
@Natashachauhan who reacted to the report tweeted;
In India…A probably 15yroldMuslimchild married to a probably 60 yrold Nigerian…
@Republicofindia tweeted;
That’s d women’sfreedominPeacefulcommunity. This young girl is married off/sold out to a Nigerian .. scene from Karnataka coastal family. God save her..

Girls Not Brides reports that India has the highest number of child brides in the world. It is estimated that 47% of girls in India are married before their 18th birthday.
The rates of child marriage vary between states and are as high as 69% and 65% in Bihar and Rajasthan.
While fewer Indian girls are marrying before the age of 15, rates of marriage have increased for girls between ages 15 to 18.
In many communities girls are seen as an economic burden and marriage transfers the responsibility to her new husband. Poverty and marriage expenses such as dowry may lead a family to marry off their daughter at a young age to reduce these costs.
Patriarchy, class and caste influence the norms and expectations around the role of women and girls in India. In many communities restrictive norms limit girls to the role of daughter, wife and mother who are first seen as the property of her father and then of her husband.
Controlling girls and women’s $exuality is an influential factor in the practice of child marriage too. Pressure towards early marriage aims to minimise the dishonour associated with improper female $exual conduct, often leading to marriages arranged around the time of puberty.
Poor educational opportunities for girls, especially in rural areas, also increase girls’ vulnerability to child marriage.

Fayose Discloses Real Reasons Buhari is Visiting Benue and Taraba
Fayose Discloses 'Real Reason' Buhari Is Visiting Benue, Taraba
“Apparently, it was the negative reactions of Nigerians, especially on Social Media and the effects on the President’s reelection bid that necessitated his hurried visit to Taraba State today."
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Taraba and planned visit to Benue, Zamfara, Yobe and Rivers states as an afterthought.
According to him, the President is more concerned about his reelection in 2019 and his visit to those states is to seek votes and not to sympathise with the people on their loses.
Fayose, in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said it was the height of cruelty that the same President, who promised to lead from the front in the fight against Boko Haram, could not visit Dapchi, Yobe State where 110 school girls were abducted by the insurgents but went on merrymaking in Kano.
“On January 9 and 12, this year, 88 victims of herdsmen attacks were given mass burial in Taraba State. Also on January 11, 2018, another 73 persons killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Benue State were buried in a mass grave in Makurdi, the state capital.
“Meaning that in Taraba and Benue States alone, 161 Nigerians were given mass burial within three days! This never caught the attention of our President. Rather, it was a visit to Nasarawa, a neighboring State to Benue that was important to him.
“To further demonstrate his lack of compassion for Nigerians, while the entire nation, especially parents of the 110 abducted school girls in Dapchi, Yobe State are still in anguish, President Buhari went to Kano last Saturday to attend a social function, thus sparking negative reactions from Nigerians.
“Apparently, it was the negative reactions of Nigerians, especially on Social Media and the effects on the President’s reelection bid that necessitated his hurried visit to Taraba State today, and planned visits to Benue, Zamfara, Yobe and Rivers States.
“I am sure the people of Taraba State won’t be hoodwinked by the President’s cosmetic sympathy, show of concern and crocodile tears, which he never bordered to shed when hundreds of indigenes of the State were being killed by suspected herdsmen,” the governor said.

Jamb official makes U-turn says 36million collected by her superior not snake
JAMB official makes U-turn, says N36m collected by her superior and not snake
Philomina Chieshe, the official of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), who some weeks ago claimed that the board’s N36 million was swallowed by a snake, has made a U-turn.
Chieshe, who works as a clerk at the JAMB office in Markurdi, Benue state, initially told top officials of the examination body that a “mysterious snake” swallowed the money gotten from the sale of JAMB scratch cards.
However, when she appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), she confessed that the money was collected by one Samuel Umoru, her superior.
A fact sheet released by the Antigraft agency indicated that Chieshe was first quizzed on February 16th 2017 and she made additional statements on April 7 and 13 2017, May 30, 2017 and June 28, 2017.
Philomina Chieshe, the lady in the eye of the Naira eating snake storm in JAMB, has been singing before the EFCC. And, contrary to her claim before the leadership of the examination body that the N36 million proceed from sale of scratch cards were eaten up by a snake, Chieshe told operatives of the anti- graft agency that the money was collected piecemeal from her by her coordinator, Mr. Samuel Sale Umoru. In one of the statements she volunteered to the EFCC, Chieshe, who is a clerk in the Makurdi office of JAMB, revealed that the Coordinator usually asked her to withdraw proceeds of the sale of the Scratch Cards from her account in two new generation banks. This money I withdrew, the coordinator used it for the office and some time for himself. She claimed that she had been warning Umoru that it was improper to use the money for miscellaneous expenses in the office or for private purposes but he would not listen. She also claimed that Umoru was in the habit of drawing IOU from the proceeds of the sale of the cards without reimbursing her. Some of the withdrawals which she claimed were at the behest of the coordinator included the N340,000 withdrawn on May 5 and 26, 2014 with ATM card. She also disclosed that she used her ATM card to withdraw N120,000 for the coordinator between June 17 and 18, 2014. “He instructed me to withdraw N640,000, using my card between June 30, 2014 and July 7, 201.”
An EFCC official who spoke to The Nation, said “ The investigating team had verified the withdrawals after a careful analysis of the statements of account of the suspect. Mr. Umoru had also been arrested and questioned about claims by Chieshe. Umoru did not deny the allegations. He was however released on administrative bail but had been reporting monthly to the anti- graft agency. The interesting aspect of the disclosure is that Chieshe’s statement was obtained long before the snake and Naira swallowing testimony became public knowledge. In all her statements before the EFCC, there was no mention of any episode of any snake and the disappearance of monies in her care. In a fact-sheet regarding the investigations, Chieshe was quoted to have said her superior — the coordinator at the Markurdi office — had asked her to withdraw the N36 million. ”
The suspect told the antigraft agency that she had been warning Umoru “that it was improper to use the money for miscellaneous expenses in the office or for private purposes but he would not listen.”
Other JAMB officials being investigated include Tanko Labaran who could not account for N23 million from sale of scratch cards at the Nasarawa office, and Yakubu Jakada who is yet to explain the whereabouts of N20 million e-facilities cards sold in Kano office.
All the suspects have been released on bail pending the outcome of the antigraft agency' investigation

From Riches To Rags? 5 Nollywood Actors Who Have Come Out To Say They Are Broke
wearetheworld
Feb 9, 2018 9:54 AM

This is a list of some Nigerian actors who have come out to declare to the public that they have gone broke.
Femi Ogedengbe
It's often shocking when an actor, who has enjoyed years of stardom, comes out to say he is broke.
Some actors either fade out of the limelight because the roles were no longer coming in, walk away from Nollywood on their own terms because the pay was no longer satisfactory, or even die because they couldn't afford their medical bills.
Femi Ogedengbe, who was once a 'successful' actor in the Yoruba movie industry, recently revealed that he currently makes more money as a security guard in the US than he did as an actor in Nigeria.
Stanley Aguzie, who landed a role in Vikings after he moved to Ireland, told Tribune Online that a lot of his popular friends are broke and miserable.
Saidi Balogun told Encomium Magazine that this is because Nollywood is no longer what it used to be and most actors can no longer charge professionally.
"We just settle for whatever the producers are ready to offer," he said.
If fans were to judge some Nollywood actors by their popularity or quantity of films, they would be billionaires. But that isn't the case.
Here are five popular actors who have come out to tell the world about their financial status:
1. Ernest Asuzu
In 2015, Daily Independent reported that Asuzu was seen begging at Shoprite in Surulere Lagos.
The actor, who was still recovering from a stroke at the time was limping while he begged for money to eat.
In 2016, the actor was gifted with a brand new jeep and cash to start afresh by Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin.
The prophet gave him a brand new jeep worth N3.5m, and 1.5 million naira to start up a new life.
In a 2017 interview with Linda Ikeji Blog, the actor said he was abandoned by the members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, who were aware of his situation.
Ernest Asuzu, until his ailment, was an active actor in Nollywood. He is popular for movies such as "Accidental Discharge," "Royal Wedding," "Chain Reaction" and "Dirty Game."
2. Baba Sala
Veteran comedian and actor, Moses Olaiya, popularly known as Baba Sala, recently requested financial help from Nigerians for his health.
Sala, who is popular for movies such as "Orun Mooru," "Aare Agbaye," "Diamond" and "Ana" needed a lot of money for his medical treatment abroad.
His first son, Reverend Dele Adejumo, said that all business investments of the aged veteran have been ruined by circumstances and poor management.
“I need help. Nigerians should help me. I am not dead yet, they should not let me die suffering," he said during a press conference.
3. Dejumo Lewis
In 2015, Veteran actor, Dejumo Lewis, who is known for his role as Kabiyesi in "The Village Headmaster" classic TV soap, said he was broke.
During an interview with Punch, the actor said that despite the 'legend' and 'icon' label, he was one of the poorest paid actors in Nollywood.
"I had to struggle to pay my rent and my staff. I must admit that right now, I am indebted to the management of the hotel that I am staying. I also owe two of my staff more than three months salary. They have been so loyal and committed to me," he said in 2015.
Lewis has starred in critically acclaimed movies such as "Dazzling Mirage," "October 1," "When Love Happens" and "Invasion 1897."
4. Uche Oduputa
In 2007, Uche Oduputa was arrested for trafficking drugs and was jailed for two years and three weeks.
In an interview with Broadway TV, the actor revealed that his financial situation led him into trafficking.
According to him, he thought it would change his condition since he wasn't getting any substantial movie roles at the time and couldn't afford to feed or house his family.
Since his release from jail, the actor has featured in successful productions such as "Husbands of Lagos," "Last Flight to Abuja," among others.
5. Tajudeen Oyewole (Abija)
Popularly known as Abija, the actor was a successful Yoruba actor until he was involved in an auto crash in 2007, while shooting the movie "Ibinu Abija."
In a 2015 interview with The Nation, the actor said that his fame hadn't translated into wealth.
"I am not rich; I don't have a roof over my head, which is part of measuring one's wealth in this part of the world; I don’t even have a land," he told The Nation.
He added that the money realised from acting is just not much, or even as enough as their fans think.

Dead man wakes up inside the mortuary shortly after been cut open for autopsy
Shock As Dead Man Wakes Up Inside Mortuary Shortly Before Being Cut Open For Autopsy
247nigerianewsupdate.co
Mar 5, 2018 1:00 PM
A man who had been declared dead has woken up inside the mortuary shortly before being cut open by the doctor for his autopsy.
A man who was wrongly pronounced dead after a car crash in India narrowly avoided being cut up in a morgue when doctors realised he was still alive.
Himanshu Bharadwaj's family has claimed a miracle after the pathologist at a hospital in Nagpur detected a pulse just as he was picking up a blade to perform an autopsy.
The patient was resuscitated and rushed to a separate ward in the hospital after the error was realised.
Meanwhile a large crowd gathered outside to protest against the perceived negligence, News18 reports.
Bharadwaj was seriously hurt in a car accident yesterday, after which he was sent to hospital.
His condition worsened and he was declared brain dead - and then medically dead - before being sent for autopsy.
Dr Gedam, of Chhindwara District Hospital, said the patient's 'respiration was dysfunctional' and his 'pulse was also missing'.
He added: 'However, his respiratory organs began responding this morning.
'At times, in brain dead patients, the heart and the respiratory system stop functioning transiently, which seems to be the case here.
'Himanshu is still brain dead. Thus, we have referred him to Nagpur due to lack of sufficient facilities locally.'
According to the Daily Bhaskar, the man was kept in the mortuary overnight.
The paper reports that he grabbed a sweeper as a means of showing he was still alive.
Bharadwaj's father is said to be a Bank of India manager.
